Energy Management

ISO 50001

Requirements with guidance for use is a specification created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for an energy management system. The standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system, whose purpose is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy security, energy use and consumption. It was released by ISO in June 2011 (source: Wikipedia).

Organizations of all types and sizes increasingly want to reduce the amount of energy they consume. This is driven by the need or desire to:

  • reduce costs,
  • reduce the impact of rising costs,
  • meet legislative or self-imposed carbon targets,
  • reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and
  • enhance the entity’s reputation as a socially responsible organization.

In tandem, governments increasingly want to reduce the Greenhouse Gas Emissions of their citizens and industries, and are imposing legislative mechanisms to compel carbon reduction more and more frequently (source: Wikipedia).
